Hitchin Symphony Orchestra
Registered Charity No. 1069554
Hitchin Symphony Orchestra, formerly known as Hitchin Concert Orchestra, was founded in 1929 by
Mary Ibberson at the Rural Music Schools Association.
The orchestra was for many years run as an evening class at North Hertfordshire College but,
when the College authorities decided in 1997 that artistic ventures such as the orchestra were
no longer financially supportable, it became a self-governing body and changed its name.
The orchestra’s motto is Promoting Live Music
and its aim is to promote
live orchestral music in the Hitchin area by providing audiences with symphonic concerts
performed to a high standard and to serve as a concert platform for local musicians,
whether orchestral players or soloists.
