Janet Hicks (Leader) Janet Hicks (Leader) graduated at the University of Birmingham and won the Hayward Scholarship for instrumental studies. Her violin teachers included Anne Mcnaghten and Ernest Element. Since settling in Hertfordshire in the late 1960s she has developed an active career embracing both teaching and playing.

Significant positions have been viola in the Macnaghten Quartet, chamber music tutor at North Herts College and founder member of the Phoenix String Quartet, specifically for the presentation of live music in schools. Today she continues to work for the Hertfordshire Music Service, to coach at residential music courses run by the Benslow Music Trust, to lead Hitchin Symphony Orchestra (a post she has held for 40 years) and Letchworth Sinfonia. She also leads for amateur dramatic and operatic productions and is a regular member of the professional Aurelian Ensemble.
